My aim is to keep your experience as stress free as possible from start to finish.
Before your session Prior to your session I will send you some samples of my work to get an idea of your favourite styles and colour schemes. I then set the studio up the day before with backdrops, props and accessories which have been selected. All fabric backdrops, wraps and outfits will have been laundered with non bio powder to protect your baby's sensitive skin and any props that we are using will have been wiped with Milton antibacterial spray.
On the day when you arrive, the studio will be lovely and warm so that your baby is safe and comfortable. If possible aim to feed your baby upon arrival at the studio to help them drift off to sleep ready for the photoshoot but if things do not go to plan (as can often happen with newborns!) please do not worry. For many of my clients it can be their first time leaving the house so please do not feel pressured to rush. Ideally have your baby dressed in something that can be easily taken off, without going over their head to reduce the amount that we need to disturb them. If you can keep the babies nappy loose, this will avoid nappy lines in the images. I will spend time photographing your baby in several props and with blanket backdrops. The session will usually last around 3 hours including time spent photographing and allowing breaks for feeds and cuddling. If you are breast feeding and prefer to have privacy this is not a problem at all and I can leave you in peace to feed your baby.
After the session We will arrange a viewing appointment for around 1-2 weeks after your photoshoot.
Keeping your baby safe is my most important priority during the photography session. As a mother myself I know how difficult it is to hand over your baby during those first days so it is very important you find somebody you trust to capture these special early moments.
Hygiene All items are cleaned thoroughly after each session ready for the next session. I only use non abrasive products which are gentle on sensitive skin. I will wash my hands thoroughly before holding your baby. During photoshoots I work with a no jewellery policy to avoid risk of injury to the newborn.
Training I have attended a paediatric first aid course in 2018 and completed online seminars in newborn photography safety awareness run by The Baby and Newborn Photography Network in 2020 covering posing and safe working practices.
Posing My props are regularly checked to make sure they are safe to use. I will not place your baby in positions that limit their circulation, compromise their airways or make them feel uncomfortable. I will always stay close to your baby while posing them on the bean bag and will also use a spotter when needed to keep your baby safe. Since babies have no head or neck control your baby will be supported correctly where required to avoid risk of injury - I get parents involved holding their baby's head where needed.
Temperature Newborns are unable to regulate body temperature easily so my studio is heated to around 26 degrees.
Please have a look at the FAQ's page for further information regarding newborn sessions.
